Grand Theft Bulma Review

This month I review Grand Theft Bulma, a canon-divergence fic that follows the Namek Saga fairly closely. Rating: Teen and up There is a bit of violence, adult language, and suggestive of sexual content. Complete, approx 83,000 words

This fic follows Vegeta and Bulma through the Namek Saga. It follows canon pretty closely with one wrinkle, Bulma gets abducted by Vegeta to help him find the Namekian Dragon balls. I gotta be honest, the only thing that kept me reading this fic was the way that the writers treated Bulma. In my opinion, they followed canon a bit too closely and those parts that were “true” to canon were flat compared to their original content.

She is truly the star of this story, not taking shit from anyone, whether it be Krillin, Vegeta, Zarbon or even Frieza himself. From chapter one, we see who this woman is in this story when she basically tricked him into taking her to Namek in exchange for sparing her planet’s destruction. She is consistent in her characterization, she is written as being incredibly stubborn, hot headed and empathetic. She threatens Vegeta multiple times, and they are all hilarious. She is just really, really well written character. If you are going to read this story, she is the reason to do so.

I gotta be honest, I really struggled with a lot of this fic. The parts that followed cannon just dragged by for me. I wish this cannon-divergence was more divergent. I think the story would have really shined if it followed the basic plot bunnies of the Namek saga, but had more (much more) of the original content that was created. There was such a difference in quality between the new content and the way the cannon content was presented, that I really struggled with reading through most of it. In several instances I had to skim through to find the writers new content because I just couldn’t handle anymore of the original Namek arc. I will say that stories written totally in cannon and following established stories is not something I genuinely enjoy, so I will give into that particular bias.

It is a truly solid story. There are really great moments, including two steamy, yet PG kisses between Vegeta and Bulma. I gotta be real with you, the scene where Bulma teaches Vegeta how to kiss, probably my favorite scene in the whole fic, the tension created between the two made for a perfect scene. If you like cannon divergence, or stories that closely follow cannon with a wrinkle or two this is a great choice for you!
